Opening on Tuesday, April 13th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.: The 8th graders are holding their Museum Exhibit Opening on Tuesday, April 13th at 6:00 p.m. We hope many of you will be able to come and support our 8th grade students as they share their work in comparing the experiences of Africans and Irish Immigrants in America in their “Who is America?” Exhibit. In addition, 6th and 7th grade classes are encouraged to visit the exhibit on Wednesday, April 14th according to the schedule sent out by Ms. Greeley.

Do you need additional assistance? Mayor Thomas M. Menino, along with local elected officials, SEIU Local 1199, area hospitals and health centers,
city departments, and community organizations will open a Referral and Support Center at the SEIU Local 1199
Bayside Office Center located at 150 Mt. Vernon St., Dorchester (next to the JFK redline station). The Center will operate from 9 AM until 9 PM, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and will offer phone lines and computer access to help in locating family and friends in Haiti. Translators will be available along with counseling support and assistance linking to needed services.

Tips for taking care of yourself and your family during these difficult times:

Support each other. Parents and caregivers should take time to talk together and find ways to meet each other's needs.

Monitor adult conversations. Be aware of what adults are saying about the earthquake or the damage. Children listen to adults' conversations and may misinterpret what they hear, becoming unnecessarily
frightened.

Limit media exposure. Protect your child from too many images and descriptions of the earthquake, including those on television, on the Internet, on radio, and in the newspaper.

Reassure children that they are safe.
Take care of yourself physically. Eat healthily, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and get proper medical care.

Support swells for anti-bully legislation
Bills call for schools to respond aggressively

After years of delays, the Legislature appears poised to crack down on bullying among schoolchildren, with hearings beginning this week on nearly a dozen bills that would force local schools to respond more aggressively to instances of cruelty among students.

Similar bills have, in the past, failed repeatedly - even as the number of states with bullying-prevention statutes has grown to 37. But now a broad group of supporters, led by the Anti-Defamation League, are giving the effort the momentum it may need to finally push a measure through to passage.

The advocates are focusing their attention on a bill, sponsored by Representative John Rogers, a Democrat, that would require school districts to report bullying incidents and any discipline imposed to the state. The bill, one of those to be taken up at a hearing Tuesday, has the support of such groups as the Massachusetts Teachers Association, Microsoft Corp., and the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association.

The groundswell of support follows the bullying case this year of an 11-year-old boy, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, a student at a Springfield charter school whose classmates ridiculed him for how he dressed, saying he acted like a girl. He hanged himself with an electrical cord at his home in April, leaving behind a note in which he told his family that he loved them and gave his Pokemon games and cards to a 6-year-old brother.

“This is an urgent matter,’’ said the boy’s mother, Sirdeaner Walker, who supports the legislation. “There are other kids like my son Carl who are being bullied every day in school. It happens in every kind of school - urban, suburban, and private. . . . Schools say they are taking care of bullying problems, but they are not.’’

Another case that has drawn attention concerns a 12-year-old autistic boy from Cape Cod who went to his first dance at his school last year.

Dancing by himself, the seventh-grader moved awkwardly, but he was having the time of his life. “He’s no dance star, but he really gets into the music,’’ said his mother, Theresa Jackson, who chaperoned the dance and asked that her son’s name not be used.

Unbeknownst to both of them, a female student videotaped some of his moves on her cellphone and later posted it on YouTube. For the next several days, students posted comments mocking him and hurled insults at him at school.

According to Jackson, school officials did little to remedy the situation - the latest in a string of incidents in which students taunted and bullied the boy over a nearly two-year period, forcing him to change schools.

If bullying goes unaddressed, advocates say it can foster a sense of loneliness, depression, and anxiety in victims as well as instill thoughts of suicide - causing students to skip school, fall behind in class, or inflict harm upon themselves. The harassment sometimes leads victims to lash out violently at others; some school shootings across the nation over the last decade were at the hands of students who had been allegedly bullied.

Nearly a quarter of Massachusetts high school students reported being victims of bullying, while 14 percent admitted to bullying or pushing someone around, according to the state’s most recent survey of health and risk behaviors, which was released last year. In middle school, a smaller portion of students said they were bullied.

While many schools have adopted policies to address bullying, the quality and enforcement of the policies vary greatly, advocates said. The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education does not have any formal guidelines on bullying policies, but recommends prevention programs upon request, said JC Considine, a spokesman.

The legislation gaining momentum at the State House would require the state to develop a model policy for local schools, which would be required to address both traditional bullying and cyberbullying - cruelty by computer.

Local schools also would have to document all cases of harassment, discrimination, intimidation, and bullying, and report on the resulting discipline. All incidents would then be reported to state education regulators, who would compile an annual report for the Legislature and periodically review each school’s policies and level of enforcement.

The stringent reporting requirements are raising concerns among some educators, because they say there is sometimes a fine line between bullying and innocuous teasing. “There is so much area for administrative confusion around the issue,’’ said Glenn Koocher, executive director of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. “We want to make sure we can curb bullying in a way that is reasonable and effective.’’

Often the point of teasing is to be humorous, while bullying is an ongoing problem in which the intent is to hurt or have power over someone, said Elizabeth Englander, director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center at Bridgewater State College, which trains school staff on bullying-prevention tactics. The legislation would require annual training of school employees.

“Most kids are good at telling the difference, but it can be difficult for an observer,’’ Englander said.

Even Englander, however, is concerned that the reporting requirement could prompt some schools not to properly classify incidents as bullying to dodge the requirement and any negative attention it could bring. Children, she said, could suffer the ultimate consequence: not getting the help they need.

Soon after Emily Dale started her eighth-grade year at Swampscott Middle School, a boy in her class began calling her a four-eye freak. Emily tried ignoring the name-calling, but the boy kept it up, eventually turning to outright discrimination, making fun of her for being Jewish and lobbing derogatory sexual comments at her.

When Emily finally worked up the courage to report the incidents to school administrators, the bullying grew worse. Although the school disciplined the boy with a one-day suspension and barred him from a field trip, his friends rushed to his defense, berating Emily at school and online. “I felt like I was being punished,’’ Emily said. “I got messages on my Facebook page, saying I was a terrible person for telling on a boy so well liked.’’

The situation grew so bad that Emily, who is now a 10th-grader, eventually enrolled at a private school.

Maureen Bingham, Swampscott’s interim superintendent, said student privacy rights prevented her from commenting on the incident, which occurred well before her appointment to lead the district. However, she said the school system has long had bullying-prevention policies, and that each school runs programs to curb bullying. The problem, she said, is that not all students follow the rules. “I think the schools do a pretty good job, but it can always be better,’’ Bingham said. “I think it’s a challenge for every school district.’’

On the Cape, Theresa Jackson said her son is doing better now as an eighth-grader at another school in the Sandwich district, where students are more respectful. The Sandwich superintendent didn’t respond to interview requests. Jackson’s son has joined a committee that organizes school dances and serves as secretary of the group, she said, but he remains fearful of going to dances.

“He hasn’t had the courage to go to another one yet,’’ Jackson said, “but he keeps trying.’’

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama released a video about Cyber Security Awareness Month. In the video, the president stresses the importance of keeping our computer networks safe. President Obama also states that he has created a new white house cyber security office which will be led by a cyber security coordinator he will appoint in the future.

During cybersecurity month, some websites are stepping up their efforts to provide quality cybersafety materials. Stay Safe Online has an entire section of their site dedicated to October being cyber security awareness month. They have links to resources, ideas on how to educate your students and schedules of cybersafety events across the country. Google is also celebrating cyber security awareness month. They have recently created the Google Cyber Security Awareness Channel on YouTube with videos dedicated to internet safety. They have also written vearious blof posts with cyber safety tips including choosing a smart password. Also, be sure to check out the Boston Public School's cyber safety website and resources!

About GRLZ Radio

The GRLZ Radio, Broadcasting & Music Production Program is a nationally recognized radio station and after school program which gives young women a voice in their community. A first of its kind violence prevention and girls' leadership development initiative, GRLZ radio allows adolescent girls to gain technical skills, build a positive identity, and speak out on issues that are important to them. The station broadcasts daily on AMRadio with all aspects of production, programming, and on-air activities orchestrated by the girls themselves.

Background: GRLZ Radio was created out of crisis in the Bowdoin/Geneva neighboorhood of Dorchester, Massachusetts at a time when violent crime was skyrocketing. Confronted with a sense of marginalization in the larger society, girls from the neighborhood started to express their concerns about their lives and their future. The youth approached Boston Mayor Thomas Menino with a desire to create a more positive image of young women and an outlet for the voices to be heard. Through an extensive collaboration, and armed with an Advisory Board of influential women in Boston's media industry, GRLZ Radio was born.

Population Served: GRLZ Radio's target population is teenage girls between the ages of 12 and 19. The girls are representative of the ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic diversity of the inner-city neighborhoods in which they live, representing primarily Haitian, African American, Cape Verdean and Latina cultures. Additionally, GRLZ Radio's peer training and community outreach components allow the program to reach more youth and affect the Greater Boston community on a much larger scale.

As you may know, all teachers and administrators are being asked
to complete a survey of teaching, learning, and leadership conditions
in Massachusetts public schools. The Teaching, Learning and Leading Survey is sponsored by a coalition including Governor Patrick, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, every education association and various business and policy organizations.

The survey will focus on issues of time, empowerment, leadership,
professional development, and facilities and resources that affect the school climate and impact student learning. The Governor and policymakers want to hear from educators directly about these conditions; the data will be used to inform decisions from the state to local levels. More information is available here.

For the survey data to have an impact, it is essential to have a high
completion rate in each school, district and for the state. School results will not be reported unless 40% of the staff responds to the survey.

All responses are anonymous and confidential. To that end, the survey has been designed so that there is no link between individuals and their responses. The vendor conducting the survey does not have any information that identifies individual educators.

The Hub

The City of Boston has launched The Hub, a new web portal exclusively for City employees, including Boston Public Schools staff. Beginning today, you will have access to this new site, which provides valuable, timely news and information to employees. Best of all, many of the transactions that you once had to complete on paper or in person can now be processed on-line through the “self-service” features of The Hub – even from the comfort of your own home, 7 days a week, 7:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.

With self-service technology, you can now do the following on-line, with no processing delays:

For those of you who are not familiar with this program, Laptops for Learning is the district's initiative to provide an instructional computer for every teacher. It is designed to create an environment that empowers teachers and fosters high student engagement & achievement.

I) Teachers and only those on a teacher contract, must update their TSAT (Technology Self Assessment Tool)- As soon as possible.

How do I do that?

1) Login to www.MyBPS.org (BPS user name & Password)

2) Under the “My Information” tab ----- Click on Technology Self Assessment

3) Answer the questions to the best of your ability.

Keep in mind:
o This tool is for informational purposes only.
o No one, but yourself will be able to access your information.
o $Funding$ is dependent on the number of users who utilize this tool and the responses you supply.

We are excited to get this program started this year so that both of you – students and parents – can gain some valuable technology skills and spend time learning and working together in a fun and stress-free class!

A few things:

Families are required to attend all scheduled classes (7 in total) and we ask you to check your calendar now to be sure you can do so. If you are unable to fulfill this requirement, we ask that you step aside and let another family participate in your place. You will find the complete course calendar in this letter.

Class will be held at The Harbor School’s computer lab and we will have a pizza lunch for our first class together (we’ll discuss lunch plans for the duration of the course next week as well).

Here we are again, on the verge of another school year. So much has changed since our last post. There a lot of new faces, spaces and we are all going through the paces to get our school up and running. Our new staff members are amazing. Here are the dates and times that I have arranged for Tony Lopes from the O'Hearn to come and assist us with scanning material in to Kurzweil and to train individuals here on how to do this scanning ourselves.

He will be here doing this scanning and training at the follwoing dates and times:

Monday, January 8 - 7:45 - 9:10 a.m.
Thursday, January 10 - 7:45 - 9:10 a.m.

After these two sessions, we can schedule additional times if we feel they will be helpful.

Geri, maybe you could speak to the Learning Center Associates at each grade level about going at these times to get trained in the scanning as well.

School Preview Time Open Houses for New Students in 2007-2008

We will be having Open Houses/ Information Sessions for family’s interested in The Harbor School for their son/daughter in the 2007-2008 school year. The remaining sessions are scheduled for the following times: Tuesday, January 16th, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Students and families will be given tours by students and may visit classrooms between 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. on Jan. 16th.

Expeditionary Learning National Conference

EL Master Class Proposals: The EL National Conference is being held on March 22nd – 24th at King Middle School in Portland, ME. We will be sending a group to attend this conference as usual. We also have always had some staff members present Master Classes at this conference. Attached to this bulletin you will find the Master Class proposal information that was e-mailed to you earlier. The deadline for Master Class submissions is Friday, January 5, 2007.

Mark your calendars! The Harbor School Winter Staff Professional Development Retreat will be held on Thursday, January 25th and Friday, January 26th. This is an overnight retreat in Ashland, so please begin to make preparations now in order to be able to spend the night with us on Thursday night. This is a very important time for Professional Development and moving our academic program and school inclusive culture forward, as well as for bonding as an adult community.

Inclusive Schools Week – Dec. 4th – 8th

We plan to highlight inclusion throughout this week. We are having an assembly to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week on Friday, Dec. 8th at 9:00 a.m. We hope each grade level will have one or two students ready to share poems, essays or artwork that represent inclusion and soul singer Jerry Mack, who is also blind, will perform for our students. I will check in with teams at Tuesday SST meetings to see if you have any students who are able to share work.

Community Dinner

Community Dinner is Monday, November 20 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.: We will be holding our annual Community Dinner on Monday, Nov. 20th. This is a Pot-luck dinner, and Parent Council members will be having some raffles and fundraising events during the night. In addition, we will be raffling off a home computer as a door prize. We also will have information available for 8th grade parents on the High School Choice process. Please do everything you can to encourage your students to attend with their families. We hope many of you will join us on this night to welcome our families and celebrate our community.

A virus has attacked The Harbor School machines. In the effort to rid our school of this malicious act I am asking for your patience and understanding. Although, this is first time our school has been hit with a virus of this magnitude I am sure it will not be the last.
